Biography
Yalana Bryant is a Michigan native who relocated to Virginia at the completion of high school. She graduated from Hampton University in 1993 with her bachelor's degree in Psychology. In August 2002, she earned her Masters Degree in Social Work from Michigan State University.
With almost ten years experience in higher education her commitment is to underrepresented students and families with the focus on creating greater access to college. She served as an academic coordinator and counselor at Hampton University. In just four months, she was lead advisor and interim director of the Student Counseling Center.
At Michigan State, Yalana was a student services specialist and part of a team that earned national recognition for their award-winning programs in student retention. She also wrote the proposal that earned her department university-wide recognition for their excellence in diversity.
Yalana joins the Pamplin family after recruiting for three years in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Last year she was the recipient of the Black Graduate Student Organization's "Faculty Diversity Award." This year she is the Virginia American Association of University Women's "Education Advocate of the Year!"
Despite her many accomplishments she fondly believes that her most rewarding position is motherhood with her greatest experience derived from parenting her nine-year old daughter, Maya.
The guiding principle of her work is to treat all families like relatives providing for them the same opportunities and access to higher education that she expects for her own child.
